This week’s WCW goes out to Emma Ferrer, the fresh-faced granddaughter of an all-time great, Audrey Hepburn.
You probably recognize Emma from the cover of the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar.
We were thrilled to have Emma sit front row at the MILLY Spring ‘15 Runway Show at NYFW - check out our front-row style reportto see what she was wearing!
An aspiring artist about to begin her third year at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, Emma was born in Switzerland, and relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 2. At 14, Emma moved to Florence, Italy - a city bursting with culture, history, and an incredibly rich art scene.
We can’t wait to see what Emma does next - with plans to move to New York in the coming months as the Florence Academy of Art opens a campus Stateside, we know she is going to be on our radar!
Featuring Koons’ work over 36 years, this exhibit is a must-see of the summer and the most complete exhibition ever dedicated to Koons alone.
From gigantic balloon dogs made of stainless steel (his most popular work of art) to gigantic mounds of Play-Doh, there is never a dull moment at this exhibit, with whimsical surprises at every turn. (See some of our favorites in the slideshow above.) Would you expect anything less from Koons? After all, the man did make history in 2013, when his Balloon Dog (Orange) sold at Christie’s for $58.4 million - setting the record for the most expensive work sold at auction by a living artist. Yep, we’re impressed.
Daytime in Napa calls for vineyards, leisurely bike rides and shopping. This means packing casual and comfortably chic ensembles. We’re loving the MILLY Racerback Romper - a fun, summery print and super comfy for a day of activities.
As nighttime approaches, it’s time to up the glam-factor. Napa is home to some of the best restaurants in the nation, so bring out the big guns in the style department. It’s all about options - make sure you pack a skirt in a fabulous print like the MILLY Winter Orchard 3/4 Skirt that you can dress up or down, as well as a standout piece like the MILLY Bicolor Gown for that special night.
WHAT TO DO:
Vineyard-hopping of course! Napa Valley is all about the wine. Some of our favorites are Domaine Chandon (a must for bubbles), Chappellet for incredible views and Cabernets, and Cakebread for a more educational tasting experience.
CFDA’s Fashion Targets Breast Cancer Ambassador: Maria Sharapova
The Council of Fashion Designers of America held a launch party for the 20th Anniversary of their Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign at the New Museum in New York City. Our designer + founder, Michelle Smith was at the event.
Superstar tennis player Maria Sharapova has been announced as the campaign’s 2014 ambassador, joining the likes of Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Kate Moss.
The FTBC campaign was started by CFDA member Ralph Lauren in 1994, and has raised over $54 million for breast cancer patient care worldwide.
"Fashion can be perceived as superficial, but the depth of the foundation’s work disputes that," says Steven Kolb, CFDA’s CEO - Fashion Targets Breast Cancer makes "a statement to the world that the industry is really caring."
Of her new role as ambassador, Sharapova says “I am honoured to partner this year with the CFDA to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. As fashion and style is a personal passion of mine, it’s impressive to see on a global and domestic scale the impact FTBC has made.”
Buy a bike at SoulCycle’s upcoming charity ride to raise money for FTBC. Check out the details here.
You can also head to Pinkberry where you can donate at checkout, and profits from certain flavour purchases will also be donated to FTBC.
As Labor Day approaches, let’s send it off in style with the best food, drinks and of course, clothes of the season. We’ve teamed up with our favorite food blog, The New Potato to show you how to make your party unforgettable. Take note!
MAKE A STATEMENT
First, you have to dress the part. Make a statement in our favorite summer blowout looks:
Chilled out? The New Potato suggests a “mix of bossa nova, french pop, soul and samba - perfect for entertaining.”
Say Danielle and Laura: "A clean white theme in the summer with pops of bright color - try some fresh-picked flowers in little mason jars around the table, vintage glasses, or playful accents in your dishware. Once it gets dark, it’s nice to have candles lit and dispersed along the table."
Caffeine. We’re addicted to the stuff. Here at MILLY we know sometimes it takes more than a cute outfit to get us to the office on a Monday morning…and that something is our morning cup of joe.
But when we stand in line for our daily dose, we look up at the menu…machiatto, cortado… and think (what are these?!). Well MILLY mag is here to save the day, with our handy guide to espresso. Read on to work out which is your new favorite drink…
Cortado/Piccolo/Gibraltar- depending on your coffee shop, this cute little coffee can go by either name. A double shot of espresso with a little bit of steamed milk and foam - it’s like a baby latte!
Flat White - double espresso with steamed milk, hardly any foam…a latte for non-foam lovers.
Espresso - a double shot of espresso, straight up
Machiatto - literally means a ‘stain’ of milk…it’s a double espresso with a splash of milk on top!
Latte - double espresso with steamed milk, foam.
Cappucino - double espresso with steamed milk, foam. Less milk than a latte!
Americano - double shot of espresso with hot water.
Pro tips: You can request any of these beverages as a single shot, if you’re a little caffeine-shy. And don’t forget to order them over ice to beat the summer heat!
So next time you’re at the coffee bar, take a risk and try a new drink - you’ll definitely impress the cute barista with your incredible knowledge of all things espresso!
Stay tuned for some insider tips on MILLY’s fave coffee shops in NYC, and check out some other secret city tips from the MILLY crew here. And don’t forget to amp up your office outfit with a gorgeousMILLY handbag, the perfect accessory with your morning espresso.
This week’s #WCW is a tribute to one of our fave style icons here at MILLY - Lauren Bacall, who passed away yesterday at the age of 89.
Bacall kicked off her career appearing in some of our favorite magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Then at only 17, she made her acting debut on the Broadway stage, eventually winning two Tony Awards. Lauren was known for her signature pose, “the look”, and her incredible poise and grace. Her years as a model meant she had a keen appreciation for fashion, and was always incredibly stylish.
We will always remember Lauren for her talent, elegance and grace. So we toast our #WCW to Lauren Bacall, she will be greatly missed.
We’re so excited to announce… MILLY is now selling Coco & Breezy Sunglasses in our stores in NYC and East Hampton !
Created by the fantastic twins Corianna (Coco) and Brianna (Breezy) Doston, Coco & Breezycreates eyewear that has been worn Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Kelly Osbourne and more.
We got to sit down with Coco and Breezy themselves for a quick interview. Not only do they have impeccable, bold style (we follow their Instagram religiously - check out photos in the slideshow!) but they’re also super sweet, and they started their brand at just 19 - an inspiration for us all.
What made you want to sell your collection in MILLY?
COCO: We first met Michelle when we went to the MILLY FW ‘14 runway show last February. We thought her clothes were amazing, and she was so sweet! So, we kept up with her collection and I thought - Oh my gosh, our glasses coincide with MILLY so well. We have to work with her. We were invited to a MILLY party and while we were talking to Michelle, I said “Michelle, I have something to tell you that needs to happen - it’s a dream of mine. We need to do a collaboration with your clothing and our glasses.” I was so shy to say that but I didn’t care! Michelle said “email me!” So now our product is in the MILLY stores and its doing really well. If I wasn’t brave that day I guess I wouldn’t be sitting here!
You grew up in Minnesota—what brought you to New York City?
BREEZY:We’ve always wanted to live in New York since we were young. On our last trip to New York for our 19th birthday we said to ourselves: “This is it. We’re going home, we’re quitting our jobs, we’re selling our car and moving to New York.”And that’s what we did. A year after high school, we moved with nothing – no money, no investors. Just an idea, a product and faith. After that, we would walk around NYC in our glasses and people would come up to us, ask us where we got them and after hearing we created them ourselves, say, “Can I buy those off of your face?” It was really organic. We made our first month’s rent just by walking around being ourselves.
What is your favorite pair?
COCO: My favorite pair is probably the Zesiro Sunglasses. I wear those every day.
What is your design process?
BREEZY: We always keep a notebook in our bags, constantly trying to think of new ideas.I do all the sketching, Coco has a really good eye for what’s going to sell and what’s going to work. She does all the editing, from colors to the hardware. We design everything from scratch. It always starts with a sketch.
Have you faced any challenges being young designers?
BREEZY: We never let our age stop us.
COCO: When I hear “young designer” I just think “young company”. We’ve been in business for only 5 years. We never let it affect us as individuals. That’s why we really appreciate Michelle believing in us and selling our product in our store. It’s really amazing.
Favorite Ice Cream flavor? BREEZY: Butter Pecan!
COCO: You know what I’m obsessed with right now? Its my secret. No one really knows about it. I’ve been going to the corner store and getting those coconut fruit pops.. It’s my guilty pleasure right now. Bree doesn’t even know!
"I don’t do fashion. I am fashion." Spoken by a true fashion icon. You recognize the name. Who better to toast our #WCW than to a woman who started creating iconic clothing in 1910. She started out by selling her own custom hats, and then expanded into creating the iconic Chanel suit. It was a revolutionary idea at the time - taking inspiration from menswear for women’s clothing. But it paid off, Chanel has major fashion-respect today.
So we toast our #WCW to you, Coco Chanel - we celebrate your life everyday in the fashion world.
Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a hilariously witty and well-written book, perfect for a summer day. Before author Maria Semple wrote books, she was a writer for television shows like “Arrested Development” and “Mad About You”… so we knew this was going to be good. The plot-line follows Bernadette, the wife of a Microsoft-guru and mother of Bee, her 15 year old daughter. We then learn that Bernadette disappears ! The rest of the book follows Bee as she strings together multiple documents to attempt to find her mother. The whole story is told through a modge-podge of ways: letters, grade sheets, FBI documents, emails… it keeps you on your feet!
We highly recommend Where’d You Go Bernadette for a hot summer day, it’s hilarious and witty. Check out our other MILLY Beach Reads like #GirlBoss and The Vacationers, they’re both great.
Plus, if you’re heading to the beach don’t forget to pack some unique bikinis !

Just a short stroll from downtown, White Elephantis on the top of our hotel list. With gorgeous views overlooking the harbor, you’ll never want to leave!
Where to Eat/Drink
Our favorite lunch spot is Cru. This cool restaurant has a beautiful view of the straight wharf dock that you can enjoy while watching boats go by. And after, make sure you grab a cone at The Juice Bar - Nantucket’s famous ice cream store.
Want something more casual? Make sure to visit Black-Eyed Susan’s. It’s a fun spot for the whole family (and BYOB). And if you’re feeling up to it, head to The Chicken Box - a bustlin’ nighttime hot spot filled with drinks, dancing and live music every night. Everyone has a story about a night at The Chicken Box…
What To Do
Take a walk around the Brandt Point Light House. It’sa signature landmark of Nantucket being the second oldest in the country. It’s the perfect spot for beach picnics (and MAJOR Instagram-bait).
Want to find out more about Nantucket’s history? Be sure to visit the Whaling Museum, where the tale of Moby Dick comes alive. Insider tip: Be sure to check out the harbor from the observation deck!
We hope you get to visit Nantucket this summer, it’s most definitely on our lists! Want more travel tips? Then make sure to check out our other MILLY Road Trip Series Posts, from Vail to Capri!

MILLY GOES TO ITALY…
MILLY designer and founder Michelle Smith tells us about her recent trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy (Have you seen her gorgeous Instagram photos?), and gives us some tips on where to go and what to see! Check it out.
As a designer, I’m a visual person so I love traveling to picturesque places for inspiration and relaxation. Beach locations are my favorite, hence my passion for designing MILLY Cabana swimwear, but I also love to take in culture, so Italy has a special place in my heart. The Amalfi Coast is pure eye candy at every turn.
After a flight from New York and a ferry ride from Naples, my family and I pulled into Capri and were instantly blown away by the view. Traveling along the coast of the Mediterranean on the famously steep and narrow cliff-side road with many (scary!) twists and turns, there are spectacular views of cliffs dotted with picturesque villages and luscious green trees - Instagram bait galore!
We started off our days with a typical Italian breakfast - gorgeous fruit and pastries and a steaming cup of caffé e latte is my idea of perfection.Italians do love their coffee - they have it down to an artform.
We start our days off going for a swim, me in my favorite MILLY Lanai bikini and my daughter Sophia in her matching MILLY Minis swimsuit and hit the road to explore the coast.
We love checking out the scenic cliff-side villages - one favorite was the city of Ravello, filled with spectacular churches, gorgeous gardens and quiet, adorable streets. I am lucky enough to have the only children in the world who love to shop so we happily explored the streets.
The Gardens of Villa San Michele to take in the panoramic views of Capri as well as Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrentine Peninsula.
By midday, we’d be craving some water time! heading down to a hotel (I recommend the Hotel Santa Caterina) by the cliffs to take a refreshing swim in crisp blue water of the Mediterranean. Our boat trip in Capri was one of our favorite days of the trip.
Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without sampling endless amounts of gelato. We loved Buonocore Gelateria and visited several times…
Italian cuisine cannot be rivaled - we can highly recommend Terazza Tiberio, Dal Paolino and Il Geranio, lovely people and local specialties.
I included some of my Instagrams of the trip above—check them out!
On Saturday, we threw a poolside cocktail party at Tom Collichio’s Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton with our co-host Chelsea Leyland and The Daily Summer to celebrate the second summer of the MILLY East Hampton boutique.
Located at 54 Main Street in East Hampton, the MILLY outpost is a cool collection of MILLY beach essentials, including a selection of hand-chosen hostess gifts. Stop by next time you’re in town!
With music by Chelsea Leyland, food by our favorite chef, Tom Collicio, and our Spring/Summer ‘14 ad campaign model, Loulou Robert in attendance, it was pretty much the perfect night. Check out the photobooth photos on Instagram (#MILLYMOMENT).
