Last night, Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray and the Council of Fashion Designers of America threw a cocktail party to kick off New York Fashion Week and announce the city’s Made In NY initiative.
It was a who’s who of the fashion set, but the star of the show in our opinion was undoubtedly Chiara de Blasio, NYC’s first daughter, in the MILLY Fringe Dress.
Look out for three exciting new and upcoming Made in NY initiatives, including:
- An NYC capsule collection next year where city-based designers will be selected to help facilitate their local production to sell to retailers in NY.
- Expanding “Made in NYC” to the apparel industry, encouraging widespread awareness of local industry jobs.
- The NYC Fashion Production fund, to help local designers with capital to grow their businesses.

Fresh off the press comes this sketch from MILLY designer + founder, Michelle Smith.
The sketch is inspired by 'organic opulence' and is a sneak peek into what we can expect to see down the runway at NYFW next Monday.
Make sure you take your front-row seat at the MILLY Show by tuning into our Live-Stream on MILLY.COM at 2pm sharp on Monday, September 8th.
Stay tuned for more Behind The Scenes looks from MILLY, and make sure you check out our backstage reports from our last show to get you in the Fashion Week zone (and for fall outfit inspiration, of course)
If you’re loving the latest #MILLYMOMENTS from the fashion set (Olivia Palermo and Julia Engel to name a few…) make sure you join in the fun and enter our #MILLYMOMENT contest for your chance to win a $1000 MILLY gift card.
If you’re not ready for a full-on fringe moment, take on the trend with a MILLY handbag - we love the MILLY Isabella Fringe Crossbody - keep it classic in black, or dare to be bold with the French Blue a perfect way to inject a pop of color into your ensemble.
Featuring Koons’ work over 36 years, this exhibit is a must-see of the summer and the most complete exhibition ever dedicated to Koons alone.
From gigantic balloon dogs made of stainless steel (his most popular work of art) to gigantic mounds of Play-Doh, there is never a dull moment at this exhibit, with whimsical surprises at every turn. (See some of our favorites in the slideshow above.) Would you expect anything less from Koons? After all, the man did make history in 2013, when his Balloon Dog (Orange) sold at Christie’s for $58.4 million - setting the record for the most expensive work sold at auction by a living artist. Yep, we’re impressed.
Daytime in Napa calls for vineyards, leisurely bike rides and shopping. This means packing casual and comfortably chic ensembles. We’re loving the MILLY Racerback Romper - a fun, summery print and super comfy for a day of activities.
As nighttime approaches, it’s time to up the glam-factor. Napa is home to some of the best restaurants in the nation, so bring out the big guns in the style department. It’s all about options - make sure you pack a skirt in a fabulous print like the MILLY Winter Orchard 3/4 Skirt that you can dress up or down, as well as a standout piece like the MILLY Bicolor Gown for that special night.
WHAT TO DO:
Vineyard-hopping of course! Napa Valley is all about the wine. Some of our favorites are Domaine Chandon (a must for bubbles), Chappellet for incredible views and Cabernets, and Cakebread for a more educational tasting experience.

This week’s #WCW is one of the greats…Sophia Loren; the embodiment of a mysterious, foreign beauty.
Beginning her career as a beauty queen at age 14, Sophia went on to dominate the film industry both in her native Italy and in the US. As the first person to win the Academy Award for best actress in a foreign language film for Two Women, Sophia was always destined for greatness. Although taking a step back from her acting career to focus on motherhood in the 70’s, Sophia continued to kill it in the film world – proving that women really can do it all. The release of her latest film, Human Voices, earlier this year has seen Sophia back on the festival circuit, and she is certainly not #sorryforpartying.
Sophia celebrates her 80th birthday this month, and is more fabulous than ever - and thats why our #WCW goes to her.
CFDA’s Fashion Targets Breast Cancer Ambassador: Maria Sharapova
The Council of Fashion Designers of America held a launch party for the 20th Anniversary of their Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign at the New Museum in New York City. Our designer + founder, Michelle Smith was at the event.
Superstar tennis player Maria Sharapova has been announced as the campaign’s 2014 ambassador, joining the likes of Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Kate Moss.
The FTBC campaign was started by CFDA member Ralph Lauren in 1994, and has raised over $54 million for breast cancer patient care worldwide.
"Fashion can be perceived as superficial, but the depth of the foundation’s work disputes that," says Steven Kolb, CFDA’s CEO - Fashion Targets Breast Cancer makes "a statement to the world that the industry is really caring."
Of her new role as ambassador, Sharapova says “I am honoured to partner this year with the CFDA to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. As fashion and style is a personal passion of mine, it’s impressive to see on a global and domestic scale the impact FTBC has made.”
Buy a bike at SoulCycle’s upcoming charity ride to raise money for FTBC. Check out the details here.
You can also head to Pinkberry where you can donate at checkout, and profits from certain flavour purchases will also be donated to FTBC.
As Labor Day approaches, let’s send it off in style with the best food, drinks and of course, clothes of the season. We’ve teamed up with our favorite food blog, The New Potato to show you how to make your party unforgettable. Take note!
MAKE A STATEMENT
First, you have to dress the part. Make a statement in our favorite summer blowout looks:
Chilled out? The New Potato suggests a “mix of bossa nova, french pop, soul and samba - perfect for entertaining.”
Say Danielle and Laura: "A clean white theme in the summer with pops of bright color - try some fresh-picked flowers in little mason jars around the table, vintage glasses, or playful accents in your dishware. Once it gets dark, it’s nice to have candles lit and dispersed along the table."
It’s not long until the summer’s over, so check out the rest of the MILLY Road Trip Series for more last-minute getaway inspiration!
The MILLY Road Trip Series is headed to the North Fork of Long Island this week, for a relaxed seaside getaway. We particularly love the towns of Mattituck and Greenport…read on for some more insider info!
The North Fork is known for its countless gorgeous vineyards. We like Croteaux Vineyards – located in the town of Southold on the fork, its adorable atmosphere will have you feeling like you’re at a vineyard in Southern France.
Do some cleansing Yoga
Take a beat and release some tension with a relaxing and strengthening yoga session. We recommend The Giving Room (they also have a juice bar!) or Yoga Shala. Both places have an calming class environment, perfect for an early morning soul-cleanse.
